Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland. Located in the south-east of Scotland, Edinburgh lies on the east coast of the Central Belt, along the Firth of Forth, near the North Sea. Owing to its spectacular, rugged setting and vast collection of Medieval and Georgian architecture, including numerous stone tenements, it is often considered one of the most picturesque cities in Europe.

Edinburgh is the seat of the Scottish Parliament. The city was one of the major centres of the Enlightenment, led by the University of Edinburgh, earning it the nickname Athens of the North.

The Old Town and New Town districts of Edinburgh were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. There are over 4,500 listed buildings within the city. Edinburgh is the worlds first UNESCO City of Literature.

Edinburgh is well-known for the annual Edinburgh Festival, a collection of official and independent festivals held annually over about four weeks from early August. The most famous of these events are the Edinburgh Fringe (the largest performing arts festival in the world), the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

Other events include the Hogmanay street party (31 December), Burns Night (25 January) and the Beltane Fire Festival (30 April).

There is also the Edinburgh Marathon in May and the Moonwalk in June for the more active visitors. Another annual event not to be missed, from the end of November until the beginning of January,  Edinburgh hosts a lively Christmas Market, as well as an open air ice rink in St Andrew's Square, there is a great buzz in the City, lots of shopping,  Pantomime and Christmas Shows, all this festivity culminates with Hogmany Celebrations second to none, live music at The Castle, thousands of people at the Street Party, certainly something to experience at least once if you can.

Edinburgh regularly polls as one of the best places to live,  it has been voted The Guardian's favourite UK city 13 years in a row. In 2018 it topped the list of 'Britain's best city to visit' in the Top 20 Travel Destinations. The city attracts over 1 million overseas visitors a year. Tourism is an important economic mainstay in the city. In August of each year during the Edinburgh Festivals, we host over 4.4 million visitors, and generate in excess of GBP250m for the Edinburgh economy.

Edinburgh is the second most popular tourist destination in the UK and was voted European Destination of the Year at the World Travel Awards 2012. Edinburgh was voted best city in the UK again in April 2018.
